why must the cutest things hurt so badly?

seriously though, WHY do the cutest things hurt so badly?  and no, i'm not thinking any deeper than surface level for this.  feel free to read into whatever you want, but i'm talking superficial things.

mainly ... shoes. like the shoes pictured below.

look closely.  you'll probs see blood near the toes.
also, the cute pink bear in the corner of the picture
does nothing to ease the foot pain.
the cutest shoes are like tiny torture chambers begging to suck the soul out of your toes by the end of the day.  but why?  why must the shoes be designed with less toe room than necessary to not end up with squished toes?   and why must the straps be made of something as uncomfortable as steel, cracking your heel with every step?  what happened to cute, stylish (emphasis on the last word) shoes?  i don't know if anything happened to them, because to be honest, i don't know that they have ever existed.

and yes, i do have a pair or two cute-ish shoes (if you stretch the definition of cute) that aren't terribly uncomfortable, but they aren't heels.  and no, i don't think you have to wear heels, but i like to.  after all, if i ever get pulled over and a cop asks me to step out of the car, they only way he'll believe the height on my driver's license is with some stellar platforms.

sidenote: if i've complained about torture shoes before, i obviously don't learn from my mistakes.

beware of the trick carpet square.

while i'm far from the most fashion-forward person in the world, every now and then i throw all caution to the wind and wear something that i know is ridiculous and doesn't match my outfit.  i've been known to do this since i was very young and often rocked the bright orange umbro shorts, multi-colored inside-out socks, and samba soccer shoes.  what can i say?  old habits die hard.

despite the understated navy dress and white cardigan that i picked out the previous night, when i woke up this morning it was very clear to me that today was a day that called for throwing the fashion rule book out the window and going with my gut.  what did that mean?  it obviously meant that today was pink shoe day.  i was exhausted after a week away from town (funny how a week off makes you more tired) and i just knew i needed something that made me smile every time i looked at it.  the pink shoes were practically glowing from their box, essentially begging me to take them to work.  so i did.  after all, what could possibly go wrong on pink shoe day?

warning: shoes may result in falling and embarrassment.
it turns out that despite pink shoe day being overwhelmingly awesome (because let's be honest...how could it not be?), pink shoe day does not protect you from trick carpet square day.  it's a shame those two days fell on the same 24 hour period this week.

here's where pink shoe day took a wrong turn:  i was waltzing across the library with a stack of new books and thinking about how i could squeeze more books into the display area (which was full full full -- come to the library and check out some new books people!).  my waltzing was unceremoniously interrupted by my body lunging forward in what i can only assume was its failed attempt to counteract the twisting of my ankle as the trick carpet square jumped up from the floor and grabbed at my pink shoe. oh the humanity!  so many things to worry about in the world.  a girl should never have to worry about trick carpet square day.

[side note: as one who is prone to stumbling, i'm quite skilled in not dropping library books when my balance is contested. today was no different. only a true librarian would sacrifice ankles to save books.]

darn you trick carpet square in front of the circulation desk.  why why why must you be so inconspicuous and yet so dangerous for ankles and pink shoes everywhere?  and why why why must you be located in front of a place where there are always, always people watching and waiting for innocent pink shoes to get slaughtered by your trickery?

oh pink shoe day.  i had such high hopes for you, but i underestimated the power of trick carpet square day.  next time i'll wear my moon shoes so i can make sure to successfully clear the carpet-square-hurdle that stands between the children's display shelves and the recently returned books.

in the mean time i'll lick my wounds and blog about my clumsiness as a form of therapy.  oh clumsy life.  you never disappoint me.

contrary to popular belief, boat shoes are not water friendly

since this is in fact my second blog post in a row, i wonder if i'm now considered a legitimate blogger?  i bet you have to do something ridiculous like have a full week of posts or something.  whatever, i'll still add "blogger extraordinaire" to my resume...right behind mind reader.  seriously, mind reader and librarian are pretty much the same thing.

anyways, as shocking as it may be, i learned something new again today! the world continues to teach me things, although i don't know that i always appreciate the things i'm taught.  maybe it's one of those "once you're older you'll understand" kinds of things.  if i'm still blogging when i'm "older" (which i don't plan on getting any time soon) i'll let you know if i've learned to appreciate any of my lessons.

so what did i learn today?  contrary to popular belief (or at least MY belief, regardless of whether it's popular), boat shoes are not water friendly.  not even a little bit.  when i woke up to another stormy day i immediately went for my boat shoes thinking that if they're good for boats where WATER splashes, they'll be good for fighting the puddles that were sure to attack me as i walked to class.  not so much.  as i trekked across campus in the hours before even the birds were awake (thanks again, grad school), i confidently stepped through puddles knowing that my shoes-advertised-for-water-transportation would keep me safe.  false.  so false.

the water began seeping through the mesh sides (which probably should have been my first clue...mesh doesn't equal waterproof), quickly making my socks squishy.  the closer i got to my classroom, the soggier my feet became.  i might as well have had sponges attached to my ankles.  a strange image, i know, but at least you didn't have to sit for an hour and a half with your feet soaking wet.  next time i wake up and the weather looks like it's straight from the pages of twilight, i think i'll grab my rainboots, hunt down some puddles, and take a mental health day.  puddle jumping is more fun than class any day.
